
Inclusive Islam Curriculum Unit 8
Unit 8 introduces students to the Islamic value of equality and the universality of this value. Students will learn that Islam teaches us that everyone is special and deserving of kindness and fairness, no matter who they are. Through the unit, they will also learn about the importance of fairness, especially as it relates to gender relations, social and political equality, and racial equity. Students will also discover what it means to be a good citizen and how we can use our role as citizens to advocate for equality and fairness.

Gender Equality
In Lesson 1, students will be introduced to the idea of gender by exploring the differences and similarities between boys and girls. We’ll then explore the idea of gender equality, learning that while boys and girls may be different in some ways, they can still be leaders in their own ways. Students will also explore the idea of gender stereotypes and the way these stereotypes can harm both boys and girls.

Social and Political Equality
In Lesson 2, students will begin to explore what social and political equality mean and how this type of equality gives everyone the right to be heard, included and respected. Students will then be introduced to inspiring figures from Islamic history and the wider world who stood up for fairness and in doing so, helped to make the world a better place.

Race, Religion, and Caste Systems
In Lesson 3 students will explore the diversity of the world, learning about people who have different religions, cultures, skin colors, and traditions. We’ll cover the right, and the wrong way, to treat people according to what Islam teaches us, emphasizing the importance of loving and respecting all people.

In Lesson 4, students will learn to define what it means to be a citizen and the different responsibilities that each citizen has to improve their community. Students will then explore what it means to be an advocate by engaging with real-life examples of advocates who have worked to make the world a more fair and equal place. Finally, students will brainstorm how they can advocate responsibly, learning to stand up for others in a peaceful, respectful, and caring way.
