
Inclusive Islam Curriculum Unit 5
In Unit 5, we introduce students to the term “freedom of expression”, and encourage them to think about what it means to express ourselves responsibly, kindly, and with dignity. We’ll learn about the different verses in the Quran that support critical thinking, freedom of thought, and freedom of expression. We’ll also identify the many ways that people express themselves, from clothing to music to arts to religious beliefs and why it is vital that we help to protect all forms of diverse expressions.

In Lesson 1, we learn about the meaning of freedom and expression, including what it means to be free and how people can express themselves in different ways. We’ll also explore the meaning of freedom of religion and what it means to be able to freely practice faith safely. Finally, students will learn about how to practice Islam while showing kindness and respect to people who follow different religions.

In Lesson 2, students will explore how art and music help people to express their thoughts, feelings, and beliefs. We’ll learn how religion and culture can influence the kind of art that people make, whether it be music, painting, or another form of expression. Finally, we’ll take a look at different kinds of music from around the world to see how music can bring people together, regardless of where they are from.

We’ll explore how the clothes that people choose can show their personality, religious beliefs, or culture and the rights that people have to express themselves through clothing. Finally, we’ll look at the unique styles of clothing that different cultures have around the world and how these styles are an important part of traditions and identity.

Students will brainstorm ways to creatively express themselves, whether it be through art, music, dress, or hobbies. We’ll also learn how to think carefully and wisely when solving problems by practicing looking at different ideas and thinking about the best solutions.
